Oculus Meta Quest 2 is currently the most popular (20 million Quest users with 6.4 million monthly active users) and least expensive (currently $299) VR system available. The lighter and more powerful Meta Quest 3 ($499) debuts in Fall 2023. For those without any budget constraints, Apple’s Pro Vision VR system ($3500) debuts in 2024. (I’ll report on that once the price drops.)

Up and Running: 5 Steps

  1. Set up Hardware: Open your box, pull the tabs from your controllers, charge your headset and follow these instructions. (This unofficial online manual may also help you.) A WiFi hookup is required, so have the name of your WiFi network and password available.
  2. Download the App. Download the Meta Quest App to your tablet or phone. (Apple or Android.)
  3. Take the First Steps Tutorial. Access the Home Menu (press the Oculus icon on the right controller). Select the First Steps tutorial.
  4. Get to Know the Controllers. People with Parkinson’s tremor may find that they need some practice when aiming a beam and pulling the trigger (snap the trigger quickly). The triggers are used to select items. The Oculus icon button (right controller) takes you to the home screen; the menu button (left controller) automatically pauses whatever application you are using.
  5. Learn a program. Pick a program and learn how to use it. (Beat Saber is a popular first app.) Here’s a step-by-step for buying apps.

Can’t Figure it Out? There’s Always YouTube. There are plenty of Quest 2 tutorials on YouTube and you can even watch them on your headset!

Oculus and Meta Quest 2

Except for minor technical and aesthetic changes, the Oculus Quest 2 is the same as the Meta Quest 2. Meta (formerly Facebook) purchased Oculus in 2014.
