Oculus Meta Quest 2 is currently the most popular (20 million Quest users with 6.4 million monthly active users) and least expensive (currently $299) VR system available. The lighter and more powerful Meta Quest 3 ($499) debuts in Fall 2023. For those without any budget constraints, Apple’s Pro Vision VR system ($3500) debuts in 2024. (I’ll report on that once the price drops.)
Up and Running: 5 Steps
- Set up Hardware: Open your box, pull the tabs from your controllers, charge your headset and follow these instructions. (This unofficial online manual may also help you.) A WiFi hookup is required, so have the name of your WiFi network and password available.
- Download the App. Download the Meta Quest App to your tablet or phone. (Apple or Android.)
- Take the First Steps Tutorial. Access the Home Menu (press the Oculus icon on the right controller). Select the First Steps tutorial.
- Get to Know the Controllers. People with Parkinson’s tremor may find that they need some practice when aiming a beam and pulling the trigger (snap the trigger quickly). The triggers are used to select items. The Oculus icon button (right controller) takes you to the home screen; the menu button (left controller) automatically pauses whatever application you are using.
- Learn a program. Pick a program and learn how to use it. (Beat Saber is a popular first app.) Here’s a step-by-step for buying apps.
Can’t Figure it Out? There’s Always YouTube. There are plenty of Quest 2 tutorials on YouTube and you can even watch them on your headset!
